Taiping Travelogue Day 1

we are back from this mini vacation
that made us all extremely drained
due to insufficient sleep/rest
(hit the sack after 2am & woke up before 9am)

it was nothing but fun, fun & more FUN!
we were fed (like a pet) almost constantly by mum and my relatives
because, according to them, "it's rare for us to visit this faraway kampong"
hahahaha

indeed, the last time lil sis & i made a trip to Taiping, mum's hometown,
was 2 years ago
and our reluctance to travel back is mainly due to the loooooooong hours of bus journey,
approximately 8.5 to 9hours?!
*sweatsprofusely*

nevertheless, we made an effort to arrange a suitable date with our boyfriends
and took a night coach to Taiping.

checking in at Golden Mile Complex..

we arrived at 9pm
but the coach wasn't ready yet.
hence, camwhoring ensued.
teeheehee

kimlai had his very last paper till 4.30pm;
lil sis & dee had to work that day as well.
no wonder everyone had droopy eyelids in the pictures above.
lol

at about 930pm,
our coach had arrived
and the 4 of us were all ready to embark on this prolonged journey.
i didn't exactly get to snooze much throughout the night
filled with bumpy roads and glaring street lights.
in fact, i was a tad uptight about the stop to alight at
(the bus will allow passengers to alight at various stops)
because the inconsiderate driver refused to inform us
which stop it was at
and there were no signages or whatsoever especially in the dark!
tsk!

Thankfully,
we still managed to alight at the correct stop
(mind you, there was NO bus stop nor terminal. just a random location at the road side)
T_T
and gave mum a call
so that she can pick us up
at... 6.30am?
*sleepyface*

i was sooooooo elated to see mum, especially her beautiful smile!
*beams*

after a quick shower,
mum drove us out for our first meal at Taiping!

the thing about laidback small towns in Malaysia - everyone can be a businessman.
this family transformed their front yard into a "shop"
with tables and chairs plus a small kitchen
for them to prepare food
so rental fees are conveniently saved!
mum also mentioned that this is quite a popular eatery
within this small town
and we can't wait to try their dishes!

oh ya, do take a glimpse at their "menu" hung on the window grille.
average cost for a dish is about RM2.70
which is merely about SGD$1.20 ?!?!

swiftly, our order was placed
with the assistance of mum's recommendations

1st & 2nd: don't they look sweet together?
but the lil sis and kimlai are continuously bickering.
hahahahaha
interesting couple! :P
3rd: kimlai was absolutely amazed by the price range of food
4th: my eating buddy! hehe

food was served promptly
and we can wait no more!!!

penang laksa, curry beehoon, beehoon mee goreng, wanton mee,
penang curry laksa and popiah.
we were awed, totally!

beehoon mee goreng and wanton mee were mediocre.
you can skip those.
but penang laksa, curry beehoon and penang curry laksa
were just heavenly!
dee particularly adores the popiah because of the generous and fresh filling!
*drools involuntarily*

everyone wiped their plates clean
and was ready for desserts!

top left: iced water chestnut.
top right: ice kachang
bottom: corn ice blended
it was a little too early in the morning
for all these cold desserts
but they were ultra refreshing
and perked us all up instantly!
:)

after a satisfying breakfast,
we merrily strolled over to a morning market
just across the street.

mum bought more food for us to try!
i was holding on to a "bouquet" of ondeh ondeh,
such a cute presentation they have!
dee was having fun with 'ah pong'!
basically, it's an egg pancake with crispy edges and spongy center.
very fragrant! :)

when the sun became too unbearably roasting,
mum drove us to our grandparents' kampong house!

top two: dee was naturally bewitched by attracted to cats
and he can't stop playing with the one
that stayed with grandpa for at least 7 years!
bottom two: mum rambled towards the front yard and began to strip the rambutan trees bare
hahaahhahaa
she's such a gem, isn't she?
:)

dee also joined in the fun!

but he didn't snip a single branch at all?!
LOL!
mum therefore decided to take over
and the harvest was spectacular!
:)

dee assumed another role - Tarzan.
but the smaller branches were too far from his reach
and he was afraid that his hefty weight might break all the branches eventually.
hence, it was literally another fruitless attempt again!
MUAHAHAHA

all the lil sis & i had to do was just to savour those sweet and juicy rambutans
hehehe
kimlai doesn't dare to eat rambutans (i honestly wonder why)
so he diligently helped to carry those harvested rambutans into the house
and obediently observed us while we munched heartily.
#silentpleasures

we walked over to grandaunt's mini-mart
where dee spotted two white kittens
which are extremely adorable!
cuteeeeeeee max!!!
:D

grandaunt's mini-mart still looked exactly the same as that 2 years ago.
loads of tidbits and snacks which you can never find in SG
(especially chewing gums in various flavors and individual packaging!)
another nostalgic experience when sis & i grabbed 2 sour plum ice cream sticks from the fridge.

simple contentment indeed.
:)

1st: lil sis & kimlai were squabbling again!
dee & i are always entertained just by watching them fight interact!
hahahaha
2nd: grandaunt was preparing lunch and offered us another array of dishes
despite our exceedingly bloated stomachs.
told you we were continuously eating NONSTOP.

mum bought 5 durians from 1 of the neighbours at merely RM20 (quality assured!)
*cheapthrills*
kimlai & dee helped to carry the durians and huge bag of rambutans
onto mum's car before we made our way back to mum's house!

sweltering heat shooed us indoor
to prevent heatstroke and unnecessary sunburns

as you can see, mum's house is really huge and spacious
with a small field beside it (belongs to her as well)
and i even overheard her introducing the sweet potato leaves, lady's fingers,
pandan leaves, chili padi that she had planted to dee.
(just like a proud farmer)
:P

moving indoor..
because mum is staying all alone in this gigantic bungalow,
only the master-bedroom was furbished.
the living room and 3 other bedrooms were rather empty
without any furniture.
hahaha

as for the kitchen..
1st: brand new fridge and stove are present
thus mum can prepare simple meals for herself anytime.
2nd: mum called us out for another round of "fruits" session!
LOL!

while waiting for mum to open up the durians,
we camwhored a little :)

the entire packet of ah pong had disappeared by late afternoon.
all thanks to....
hmmmm
=X

alright,
durians moment now!
again, kimlai doesn't dare to eat durians (he's seriously missing out A LOT)
hahahaha
hence he was, again, observing our pleased expressions while we indulged in the durians.
God, they were truly yummy!
:D

indoor affair without proper furniture in the living room meant....
we were all on the floor!
hahaha
there were several stools but we just prefer to laze around on the floor
(mum kept changing position as well! lol)
bottom left: our cousin was there with us too!
:)

the sweet lovebirds
bottom: trivial disagreements which sometimes led them to unexpected laughter :)

our younger cousins came over to mum's house as well
they were extremely energetic and active.
all of a sudden, we felt old, really OLD.
hahaha

when the cousins left,
everyone in the house unknowingly took a nap,
especially with the intimidating thunderstorm outside.
right: dee kept himself entertained by playing patapon.
left: puny packet of nasi lemak that costs RM1.
tasty but definitely not filling enough for average sized stomachs.
:P

at about 7pm,
it was dinner time (let's eat again!)
mum drove us to Lemon Tree Seafood restaurant
apparently, several seafood restaurants are competing against each other
at this district
and most of them are quite crowded during dinner time!

2 years ago, we came here before
and the food is still as delectable now.
seafood porridge - generously cooked with crab,
pomfret and prawns, making the soup reaaaaally saccharine.
scallops - fresh and tender.
刺螺 (i don't know the English name for it) - my 1st time eating it and it's not disappointing at all!
kailan with fried cuttlefish - cuttlefish was surprisingly not oily at all.
YUM YUM YUM!

my cheeky boyfriend and his stunts
right: uncle Thiam recommended this Orange juice milk.
we were all taken aback by the freshness and delightful combination.
*thumbs up*

right after dinner,
we headed over to a family KTV
which my youngest uncle is currently working at.
we had the entire room/hall all to ourselves
and didn't have to pay a single cent.
woohoo~~~~!

the day night ended at about 1am
where we headed to a nearby night market for supper (FOOD AGAIN)
before going back to mum's house.

(how not to gain weight, you tell me?)
hahahahaha

stay tuned to the next post!
:)
